Philosophy
Susanna Wesley School created a new educational vision. This vision was influenced by the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach. The child and their experiences are at the heart of the Reggio Emilia philosophy.
This philosophy encourages:
- Learning by allowing children to freely express themselves through the arts.
- Children to become self-motivated learners which promotes increased brain development and fosters a deeper understanding of concepts.
- Each child and seeing them as competent, curious and creative.
- The learning environment as a “third” teacher believing that the environment promotes and stimulates curiosity, exploration, inquiry and self-directed learning.
- Collaboration between parents, teachers, children and community.
Based on this philosophy in conjunction with our educational knowledge and our many years of working with and caring for children we developed our new vision.
Our Vision
- All children are of sacred worth. They are competent, resourceful, curious, creative and powerful.
- Learning is a group effort. Collaboration among children, parents, community and staff is crucial to the growth of each child.
- Classroom design is part of the learning process. Our physical environment stimulates exploration, inquiry, self-learning, creativity and collaboration.
- A child’s experiences are the heart of learning. Discovery and expression of this learning is found in the arts, music and movement, investigation and play.
- Developing confidence, a love of learning and providing different learning styles honors the uniqueness of each child.
- Interaction with the local community enhances the curriculum. This interaction teaches values, health, safety, wellness, family, citizenship and history.
- Mastering the developmental goals of the Connecticut Preschool Benchmarks prepares students for Kindergarten.
